Dublin’s under-21 footballers totally overwhelmed Laois in Wednesday night’s Cadbury Leinster U21FC quarter-final at Parnell Park.

The Dubs will face Westmeath in the provincial semi-final in two weeks’ time (neutral venue) after the midlanders defeated Carlow, 0-11 to 0-3, in their last-eight encounter.

Jim Gavin’s Dubs had it all their own way - blasting out of the blocks with points from Ciaran Kilkenny (two), Philly Ryan (free), and Gary Sweeney inside nine minutes to set the tone of what was to follow.

If you were expecting a determined Laois fightback it never materialised as Dublin cruised further ahead as the half progressed and by half-time were out of sight when leading 1-11 to 0-1.

Kilkenny was their tormentor-in-chief by scoring 0-5 in the opening half as the Dublin attack created opportunity after opportunity but were guilty of some bad shot selection and could have held an even greater advantage at the break.

The goal arrived in the 14th minute when Sweeney latched onto a loose ball and played Philly Ryan through on goal and the Brigid’s lad made no mistake from close range.

The traffic continued to flow one-way after the break as points from Ciaran Reddin, Ryan, and Kilkenny extended the home side’s lead - even corner-back Jack Smith got in on the act when he split the posts in the 38th minute for Dublin to move 1-15 to 0-1 clear.

Eight minutes from time a pinpoint pass from Sweeney picked out sub Gerry Seaver who fielded strongly before firing low to Dermot Kelly’s net.
