Club Notes May 6th 2013

posted May 8, 2013, 11:49 AM by Kevin Brassil   [ updated May 8, 2013, 12:03 PM ]

We had a fab club day on Saturday, starting with a world record attempt, poc fada and kick fada in the park. Among the winners for these were Kevin Brassil (Our Club man of the year), Rory Kelly, Ella Moreau and Antoinette Kelly.
The Kick fada winners were Calum Grenham, John Broderick and Lauren Robinson.

All activities moved over to the club house where thanks to Sarah Barrett (PE teacher from Manor House) and her students we had every child with a painted face and ever some Adults! Jack Hanley to name one.
The Dunk Tank was up and running at 1pm thanks to the Dublin Fire brigade that filled our Tank. We had 22 willing volunteers from players to members of the Executive, first up was our Chairman Mr Lee and his lovely wife Niamh had the honour of being the first to Dunk him. PUT PICK OF CONOR AND NIAMH HERE PLEASE.

The Dunking continued all day and we had some really celebrities going in, Banana man, former Dublin midfielder Ciaran Whelan (his brother paid big money to be the first to dunk him, a few mothers came down to Dunk their Children, Mary Lawlors mom Olive came all the way from Galway for the pleasure and the last to be Dunked was our GPO Dotsy O Callaghan (Dublin Hurler).

Over on the Astro we had a crossbar challenge with 3 jerseys worn by county players up as prizes (thanks to Dotsy). Our BBQ got fired up at 4pm and we had music all day thanks to Mark O Connor. It was a fantastic fun day and the icing on the cake was that we were also raising much needed funds for Cystic Fibrosis Hopesource Foundation, a grand total of 1,150 was raised. Thank you to all who participated and supported the day. We have to give special mention to the four ladies who maned the shop/BBQ Siobhan Reid, Caroline Sutton, Claire Reid and Eva Fitzsimons, also to all the stewards and to Fergal Smyth whose brainchild this was.

Another String to our bow... Raheny GAAs first cycling club starts on Sunday 12th May 9am at the club House. We are heading to Howth and back all abilities welcome. We will stop at Howth for a coffee. Contact Brian Kavanagh 0866084473

Our U14 Girls football are bag packing this sat in Tescos in Clare Hall, if your up there please support well.

On Saturday the Under-9's played St Brigids.
Team 3 got the short straw as their St Brigid's opponents were that bit stronger overall. However, the effort and enthusiasm shown by the lads was great to see. Excellent performances from Cormac Lenehan and David McCarthy stood out. Team 2 had it their own way from the start and even the strong wind didn't phase them playing into it in the second half. John McNally had a stormer of a game and Stefan Twomey took some very opportunistic scores. It really was a case of a game of two different halves for Team 1 which ran out of the starting blocks but didn't do as well in the second half into the breeze. However, the lads never gave up trying and a couple of well taken scores from Jason Maguire and a strong performance from Matthew McGloin were the hghlights.

AHL2 had a win over Clann na gael.

St Johns got the better start going in 2-2 to 1-1. Our girls dug deep and a few personal changes helped RAheny to overcome the deficit with a fine 1-1 from Aifric O Brien. the win was sealed with a well taken free by Zoe Dalton to see our girls take the win 3-5 to 3-4.

Jun A Hurlers
Raheny 3-19 v 2-8 Cuala, after a hard fought victory againist Liffey Gaels, our junior As travelled to Shankill Tuesday evening to play Cuala in the second round of the championship. Raheny found it difficult to get going in the 1st hald however managed to go in at half time with a narrow 2 point lead. After a stringent hald-time shake up Raheny came out in the second half all guns blazing. Strong defending by our backs, in particular Ciaran Groves and Tommy Hamill allowed Cuala to only register 4 points in the second half. Fine displays by forwards John Coughlan, Jimmy Keogh, Fergal Smyth, Cian Daly and also Colm Donegan in midfield left Raheny registering an impressive score of 3-19. This result puts Raheny on top of the table after 2 victories with our next game scheduled on May 19th v Sylvesters. Keep up the good work lads.
