Raheny U9s Raheny Lions Report by: Paul Nolan Squad:

Nolan, Ciaran Kerrisk, Martin Bishop, Matt Lawless, Jack Codd, Johnny Baldwin,
Sean Quinn, Matthew Dowdall and Adam Roberts. A powerful Lions Team took to the field to play Na Fianna in hurling on a very wet day in Glasnevin. Coming into this game the Lions were on an unbeaten streak of 3 games following a great win over Naomh Barrog two weeks ago. Special mention goes to both Martin Bishop and Ciaran Kerrisk who showed great sportsmanship in agreeing to play half a game each for Na Fianna who were missing a full team. Well done lads. From the off Raheny Lions dominated the proceedings, particularly the mid field with strong performances from Matthew Lawless and Ciaran Kerrisk. Max Osborne, Adam Roberts and Jack Codd provided a really strong defensive back line breaking up the few Na Fianna attacks brilliantly and provided great go forward ball for the Lions forwards Johnny Baldwin and Sean Quinn. Jamie Nolan in goal had little to do but when called upon on a few occasions cleared his lines very well. Matthew Dowdall having performed really well upfront relieved Jamie in goal and again made some important saves. Raheny Lions performed brilliantly and by half time the game was all but over with points from Matt Lawless and Ciaran Kerrisk and two goals from Johnny Baldwin and one from Jamie Nolan. The second half continued in the same vein with Martin Bishop now back on the Raheny team marshalling our own Ciaran Kerrisk who was now playing for the opposition, very well through a series of excellent blocks. The Raheny defenders had very little to do as the Lions surged forward at every opportunity. Another two points and two goals from the sticks of Matt Lawless, Sean Quinn and again Johnny Baldwin again all but killed off Na Fianna. The referee blew the whistle for full time a little early in view of the horrendous weather conditions. Final score Raheny Lions 5 goals and 4 points (17 points in total to one goal for Na Fianna. Well Done Lions. A very good win but in particular a strong display of both striking on the ground and in the air. Keep up the great work. Raheny under 9s have been working very hard in training on their lifting and pucking. All this hard work came together on a windy and very cold morning in Drumcondra. The Under 9s played through the rain against Na Fianna. From the start, Na Fianna's goalkeeper could find a free player to puck to such was the absolutely wonderful marking by the Raheny boys. Starting from the back, Conor Watters was very steady in goal and all his puck outs went over the half way line to our midfielders and forwards. At the back there was great battling, marking and purpose in the tackling from Joseph Doherty, John Broderick and Colin McAweeney. They didn't give Na Fianna a moment on the sliotar throughout the game. Over the course of the game the midfield partnership of Ultan and Dan roamed up and down the park, fighting for every ball, getting ball from the defenders and forward to the upfront trio of Cormac, Mathew and Rudy. Raheny went in at half time two goals to one up with some very competitive airplay including a great goal from a puck from the side of the pitch from Dan. Dan was the scorer of both goals for us in the first half. The second half was more of the same and if anything the Raheny boys upped the pressure. Adam Robinson was in a class of his own upfront, getting the ball into his hands and onto his hurley at every opportunity. John Broderick was fabulous up front in the second have and scored two goals and two points. Ultan scored with a ferocious strike on goal late on. Na Fianna scored one goal in each half. Raheny ran out winners by 5:2 to 2:0. The coaches were absolutely delighted, everything they worked on in training with the boys was put into practice. A big congratulations to the boys who were happy at the end of the day despite the cold and the rain. Well done, it was their best performance.
